Frequently Asked Questions
What makes your approach different?
I don’t just design beautiful rooms—I look at what’s already there and see what it could become. I take the time to understand how you use your home, what’s working, and what isn’t, then find thoughtful solutions that bring it all together. My approach balances function with beauty to create spaces that feel comfortable, collected, and genuinely like you.
Do I have to renovate to transform my home?
Not at all. Some of the biggest transformations come from simply seeing a space in a new way. Rethinking the layout, editing what you already have, improving lighting, or introducing a few carefully chosen pieces can completely change how a room looks, feels, and functions. A beautiful transformation doesn’t always require a major renovation.
How much does interior design cost?
Every project is different, so design fees depend on the scope, size, and level of support your home needs. Services start at $500, with the total investment determined by the specific needs of your project. During our initial conversation, we'll talk about your goals, priorities, and budget so I can recommend an approach that makes sense for you.
What services do you offer?
I offer full-service interior design, space planning, room refreshes, and home styling throughout the Portland Metro Area. Whether you're looking for a complete transformation or simply need help bringing one room together, each service is thoughtfully tailored to your home, your needs, and the way you live.
How do I get started?
Getting started is easy. Fill out my contact form and tell me a little about your home and what you’d like help with. From there, we’ll schedule a time to talk about your project, what’s working, what isn’t, and what you’d love your space to become.
What if I don't know my style?
That’s completely normal. You don’t need to have a defined design style or know exactly what you want. Often, it starts with knowing how you want your home to feel. Together, we’ll uncover what you’re drawn to and use that as the starting point to create a home that feels natural, cohesive, and like you.
What does a Home Styling service include?
Home styling is about bringing the finishing touches together to make your space feel complete, personal, and inviting. Depending on your needs, this may include thoughtfully arranging existing furnishings, selecting décor and accessories, incorporating artwork, and identifying pieces that will help pull the room together. Home Styling services start at $500.
Do I need full-service interior design, or can you help with just one room?
You don't have to take on a whole-home project to work together. I offer services for individual rooms as well as larger projects, from space planning and room refreshes to home styling and full-service interior design. We'll determine what level of support makes the most sense for your home and what you'd like to accomplish.
How would you describe your design style?
My style is warm, layered, and timeless, with a mix of vintage and new, natural textures, rich color, and pieces that bring character to a space. I’m drawn to interiors that feel collected rather than overly designed—beautiful, inviting, and meant to be lived in. I want your home to feel like it evolved naturally over time, not like it came straight from a showroom.
Do you offer residential interior design in Portland, Oregon?
Yes. McDermott Interiors provides personalized residential interior design services in Portland, Oregon and throughout the Portland Metro Area. I work with homeowners who want their spaces to feel more comfortable, functional, collected, and reflective of the way they live. Whether you're looking for help with one room or a larger whole-home project, we'll create an approach tailored to your home and your needs.
Can you help with furniture layout and space planning?
Absolutely. Thoughtful space planning is an important part of creating a home that feels as good as it functions. I'll look at the way your space is used, identify opportunities to improve flow and functionality, and develop a layout that makes the most of what you already have. Whether you're working with an awkward room, downsizing, or simply want your home to function better, we'll find solutions that work for the way you live.
Can you help me choose furniture, lighting, rugs, and décor?
Yes. I can help you select the pieces that bring a room together, from furniture and lighting to rugs, artwork, and accessories. I'll consider your existing pieces, the proportions of your space, your lifestyle, and the overall design direction so that everything feels intentional and cohesive rather than simply matched.
Do you offer interior design consultations?
Yes. A design consultation is a great place to start if you're unsure what your space needs or what level of design help is right for you. We'll talk about your home, what's working and what isn't, your goals, and the changes you'd like to make. From there, I can help determine whether a consultation, room refresh, space planning, home styling, or full-service interior design is the best fit for your project.
Can you help me update my home without completely starting over?
Absolutely. You don't need to replace everything to create a home that feels fresh and cohesive. I often work with what clients already own, identifying what can stay, what could be rearranged or repurposed, and where a few thoughtful additions can make the biggest difference. The goal is to create a space that feels refreshed and intentional while still feeling like your home.
When should I hire an interior designer for my home?
There isn't one right time to bring in an interior designer. It can be helpful when you're moving into a new home, feeling stuck with an existing space, planning a renovation, struggling with furniture placement, or simply want your home to feel more finished and cohesive. Bringing a designer in early can also help you make more confident decisions and avoid costly mistakes.
